Veterinary Research Institute
Laboratory services to the livestock sector are provided by the Veterinary Research Institute at the national level. Veterinary Investigation Centers located throughout the country provide regional/district level laboratory services to the livestock industry.
Laboratory Services provided by the Veterinary Research Institute
- Diagnosis of animal diseases, especially contagious/notifiable/zoonotic diseases of farm animals, poultry and fish/aquatic animals
- National reference laboratory for diagnosis of brucellosis, leptospirosis in livestock in Sri Lanka
- National repository of anti-microbial resistance (AMR) for animal health and focal point for antimicrobial resistance in terrestrial animals
- Health certification for fish and shrimp diseases for export facilitation
- Microbiological testing of import and export quarantine samples (feed, feed ingredients, live animals, animal products etc.)
- Species Identification of meat samples (Cervus/deer family, cattle, buffalo, swine, goat & dog)
- Testing of milk & milk products for composition, keeping quality, adulterants, physical properties & microbiological quality
- Identification of A1 & A2 Milk producing cattle
- Analyzing proximate composition (Moisture, Protein, Fat, Fiber, Ash & Sand) and mineral composition (Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Copper, Cobalt & Manganese) of animal feed, feed ingredients, mineral mixtures, mineral supplements & blood
- Analyzing gross energy of feeds and feed ingredients
- Analyzing total aflatoxin level and B1, B2, G1 & G2 levels in feeds and feed ingredients
- Formulating least cost feed rations for livestock animals and poultry
- Soil analysis for pH, salinity, EC, organic matter, texture and major plant nutrients
- Mineral analysis of plants and soil
- Water analysis for pH, hardness, TDS, ES, salinity and nutrients
- Forage seed analysis for purity, germination and viability
- Quality analysis of silage
